Quiet Vault

This door is guarded by noise. Every reed in the room is driven by a standing wave, and any reed that feels the air moving keeps its bolt thrown. Shorten or lengthen a pipe until a node — a still point — sits exactly under each reed, and that bolt slides back on its own. One drone is shared by every pipe, so the harmonic you choose decides which lengths are even possible.

Drag the gold cap at the end of a pipe, or click a pipe to set its length. Teal ticks are the still points.

The Drone

The wave drawn in each pipe is |sin(n*PI*x / L)| — a real standing wave, recomputed every frame. Reed ticks glow amber where the air is moving and teal where it is still, and a pipe falls quiet only when every reed inside it is still.
